DIANE SAWYER COVERS HINDU WEDDING BY A PERFECT DAY
A Perfect Day was recently contacted by a producer at ABC News to ask if the company was planning any newsworthy weddings. “We are planning a Hindu wedding in Pasadena complete with an arrival of the groom by elephant, as well as a traditional Catholic wedding on the Amalfi Coast of an A-list Hollywood director…take your pick!”
ABC chose the local event which proved to be quite a spectacle.
The wedding was held on October 25th and featured two completely distinct ceremonies, a Hindu wedding followed by a Protestant ceremony. Diane Sawyer’s coverage will air on Primetime on ABC this fall. The entire event was held at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, and began with the Groom riding two blocks to the ceremony on an elephant named Susie and accompanied by his family. Susie had been decorated by four artists, and her processional was proceeded by traditional dancers and drummers. The Bride and all of the wedding guests watched the processional from the museum terrace, where the Hindu ceremony was held. When the elephant came around the corner, the Bride & Groom waved to each other, and the Hindu priest blew a conch shell to announce their arrival. As the processional approached the museum, the drummers ceased playing and a bagpiper began playing the traditional Scottish music of the Groom’s family. The Bagpiper led the Groom and his family upstairs to the terrace, and the Groom took his seat in a throne chair to be blessed by the Bride’s family. Following this beautiful ceremony, Dharma Shetahu, the Hindu priest, led the Bride & Groom to the mandap for the ceremony. The naturalistic structure of the mandap was composed of bamboo poles, with a delicate curtain of orchids strung on gold braid. The Hindu ceremony included the traditional fire ceremony. Following the ceremony, the Bride & Groom changed into traditional Western dress for a Protestant ceremony that was performed by Judge Nora Manella, and included a performance of Ave Maria performed by California Ninth Circuit Court Justice, the Honorable Carlos Moreno. Immediately following the ceremony, the Bride & Groom had their first dance, which was a beautiful waltz choreographed by A Perfect Day staff member. The dinner, a traditional Indian meal served family style, was created by Radhika’s of Pasadena from recipes provided by the Bride’s mother.
Acrobatic Bhangra dancers, wearing elaborate traditional costumes with headdresses, entertained the guests and provided dancing lessons while the bride and groom changed their attire.

Set against the backdrop of the architectural beauty of the museum, we have created a stunning and naturalistic, outdoor presentation of vibrant Hindu tradition. Inside we created a completely different mood for the Protestant ceremony – a Baliwood nightclub atmosphere. It is the dream of any event designer to have these kinds of tools to work with.”
